Our Disappearing Planet is delighted to have awarded a grant to The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International to help towards the on-going protection of gorillas by 25 trackers and 2 armed anti-poaching patrols (five-member teams) of the Karisoke Research Center.
The trackers and anti-poaching patrols are the lifeline for the gorillas.
After the poaching attacks in 2002 which resulted in the death of 9 mountain gorillas, the Karisoke Research Center began dawn-to-dusk protection for the groups we had at that time.
This protection continues today and trackers remain in close, but not always visual, proximity to the gorillas so they can deter poachers from attacking these habituated gorilla groups.
